Leicester’s final day trip to Blackburn will conjure up happier memories

Leicester City's final-day trip to Blackburn Rovers is hardly a contest to get excited about, but the Foxes have had happy memories before when playing in Lancashire.

Two former Premier League title winners play each other on the final day in the Championship, as Leicester do battle with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Fair to say, they're both nowhere near these former glories, right now, with the Riversiders just about sealing safety under Michael O'Neill, while Gary Rowett has a disastrous relegation on his CV with the Foxes, having failed to be a season-changing spark for the Midlands outfit.

Neither team has much to celebrate going into the final day, therefore, but Rowett - who could be taking charge of his final game in the hot-seat - is urging his players to put in an admirable performance, still, for the sake of the away supporters.

The season is finally over for Leicester

The Leicester fans who do travel to Lancashire on Saturday will just be glad to see the back of a horrible season, with their beloved club suffering the abject fate of back-to-back relegations, to join an exclusive club with teams such as Luton Town.

It just hasn't been good enough all campaign long, and Leicester's away form being so dire has culminated in this relegation happening.

Indeed, Rowett's battered and bruised outfit has only won four league games on the road all season long, so the fans travelling in their numbers to Ewood Park will not be expecting a rare victory.

Rowett has urged his team to at least show some "fight and desire", but Leicester supporters won't be holding their breath expecting that either, as his troops have had all season to try and show some degree of fight or care, and it has never really been apparent.

Heading to Lancashire towards the end of a season will evoke some happier memories, though, with Enzo Maresca's memorable title-winning team back in 2024, actually clinching the league, when travelling to Blackburn's near neighbours, Preston North End.

Leicester can hang onto some happier memories

If Leicester fans want a crumb of comfort heading to Blackburn on Saturday, they could fondly look back on their side's brilliant title-winning exploits from two years ago in the same neck of the woods.

A Jamie Vardy double on a summery night at Deepdale would help Leicester on their way to sealing the title, with Kasey McAteer further making sure of a convincing 3-0 win, to seal the Foxes' insane 31st victory of the campaign.

Abdul Fatawu, who has unfortunately suffered relegation this season, was a big part of this famous night in Leicester's history, too, as he assisted McAteer's game-clinching strike.

He is unlikely to feature against Blackburn, as per Rowett's pre-match revelations, as he eyes a return to the Premier League, which he was first gifted under Maresca.

Even Harry Winks would start this emphatic victory, when he was very much in the Leicester good books, before completely souring his Foxes legacy this season, with petulant outbursts.

It's extremely unlikely that Leicester fans will see such a classy display on Saturday, but bowing out with a win at Ewood Park would at least raise a rare smile among supporters, ahead of a huge summer in the up-and-down club's history.
