Leicester’s ultimate top ten players ever: Goalkeepers No. 2, 1
According to Banks himself, Peter Shilton had threatened to leave if he was not made first choice so the club had a difficult decision to make. Even then, the Leicester board refused to give Gordon a loyalty bonus to which he was entitled, and the deal only went through because the Potters agreed to pay it instead.
Banks was probably still the best goalkeeper in the world when he left for the Potteries. His legendary save against Pele in the 1970 World Cup illustrated his pedigree. In 1972, at the age of 34, his career was cruelly bought to an end (in English football at least) when he tragically lost an eye in a car crash.
One interesting fact about Banks. At the time he signed for the club, Leicester City owned houses which they rented out to players. The City keeper moved into the house - number 75 Kirkland Road, just off Narborough Road South - recently vacated by legendary Foxes marksman Arthur Rowley. Banks lived there for his entire nine-year spell with the club eventually buying the house.
On Thursday, the list completes with honourable mentions.
