Leicester loanee was frustrated with Foxes minutes

Leicester City loanee Tom Cannon has opened up about his time with the Foxes under Enzo Maresca. The player had plenty of love from supporters, so here is what he had to say and our thoughts.

The King Power side brought in Tom Cannon from Everton at the commencement of their EFL Championship winning tour. However, the player barely featured for the Champions, as the Foxes still owned a compliment of Premier League strikers.

The English forward appeared only 16 time across all competitions last season, as well as only featuring for a total of 600 minutes. Compare that to his loan spell at Stoke City: Cannon already has 416 minutes in only six matches.

Leicester City loanee on lack of gametime

It is unsurprising then that Tom Cannon has something to say regarding his lack of minutes for the King Power club, and his departure from Leicester City on loan to the Championship side.

"I thought, given the minutes, I could perform... before I left... we came to the conclusion that it was best for me to go on loan. I accepted the club’s decision"

Tom Cannon

The English striker did not perform poorly for the Foxes. However, with the lack of appearances, Cannon only ever scored twice for Maresca's team, and collected a singular assist in the Championship. Add to this that most of his appearances were late in matches and more of a defensive posture to stick back and help the team defend, and his lack of chances makes sense.

As a result, when Steve Cooper came in, what he can see from the stats is a player who does not create many chances, does not defend with quality, and is unproven in this crop of talent. Cooper must have felt he had no choice but to send the player out on loan while bringing in a couple others.

"I kind of felt a tiny bit of frustration from my end because I wanted that challenge to play in the Premier League and show everyone what I could do"

Tom Cannon

Tom Cannon could likely have gotten a small amount of game time in the Premier League had the club made other decisions. The departure of Kelechi Iheanacho, the retention of Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka, and the loan signing of Odsonne Edouard, all culminated in little space for Cannon. At the same time, remember that Daka is injured, and Edouard has also barely featured. The ever-reliable, but aging, Vardy remains the first choice: Cannon could have come off the bench for Vardy.

It is fair that the player feels frustrated with both the club and Welshman head coach made the choice to let him go without giving him a fair opportunity to showcase his abilities. He now has four total goals for Stoke. Even a small portion of those chances he has taken could have been the difference maker for Leicester City in their recent matches.
