If Russell Martin is unveiled as the long-awaited Gary Rowett successor at Leicester City, the 40-year-old will be looking to immediately hit the ground running.

Indeed, he would be entering the pressurised dug-out at the King Power off the back of some dire form in charge of both Southampton and Rangers, meaning he will have a sinking feeling in his stomach, again, if he isn't instantly successful with the Foxes.

Bowing out from the Saints with only one win from 16 Premier League matches, he didn't fare much better at the helm of Rangers, with Leicester fans worrying he could be a big flop, if his awful stint at Ibrox is anything to go by.

Martin's awful reign at Rangers

The Scotsman would have been viewed as an underwhelming appointment at Rangers when he was announced as the new Gers boss last June, when looking at his worrying late Saints numbers.

His managerial reputation would only get dragged through the mud more at the helm of the Glasgow giants, with Martin managing to steer the Scottish Premiership giants to just one paltry league win from seven attempts.

Losing 6-0 to Club Brugge in an embarrassing Champions League collapse, as well, the 40-year-old would barely last three months in the hot seat before he was unsurprisingly dismissed.

All of this poor form as a backdrop means Leicester fans are approaching the news that Martin is a frontrunner to replace Rowett with extreme caution.

Funnily enough, if he does take on the reins, he could be about to link back up with player who cost him his Rangers employment.

Martin could manage player who cost him the Rangers job

Martin likely doesn't play back over the events that saw him be handed an early Rangers axing on loop.

It was an unconvincing 1-1 draw at the hands of lowly Scottish Premiership outfit Falkirk that finally put him out of his misery, as Henry Cartwright smashed home a late equaliser for John McGlynn's hosts.

It's a mad coincidence, but Cartwright was only a loanee on the books of the Bairns, as he now returns to parent side Leicester this summer, striving for first-team minutes in League One.

The 21-year-old did impress at Falkirk last season, but that late equalising effort against Martin's sorry outfit was only one of two goals he managed to bag for the Scottish side.

Martin could be tempted to hand Cartwright some senior action back at the Foxes if he is trusted with the vacancy, despite delivering the 40-year-old his knockout punch in the Ibrox dug-out.

After all, he has seven goals and seven assists playing for the U18s and U21s previously, and with a season of senior football now under his belt, he will be raring to go as League One football comes onto the calendar.

Martin won't want to be reminded of his Rangers failures incessantly if Leicester gambles on him being Rowett's successor, but it would be slightly unavoidable if he links back up with Cartwright.

Funnily, the player who sounded his death knell in Glasgow could end up being a breakout talent that helps him traverse the initially tricky waters of the Leicester job.
