Football is a more complicated game than many observers, typically those uninvolved, suggest. As a matter of fact, various nuances and intricacies exist which managers and coaches must exploit, then embrace and impart upon their players.

Indeed, new Leicester City manager Russell Martin has started to bestow his knowledge and methods on the Foxes roster; he's been bestowing all over the place! He is effectively broadcasting his distinct philosophy across the training pitches at Seagrave.

The Blue Army, the collective name for the Leicester fan base, were initially unconvinced by the appointment of the one-time Scotland international. Supporters harboured significant reservations regarding his recent track record, specifically the unceremoniously calamitous tenure that culminated in Southampton's relegation from the Premier League.

However, this writer and outlet believe that, even in an ridiculously infant stage of his tenure, Martin is in fact going about his business appropriately thus far. The agency and clear intentions of the man are difficult to ignore and respect, regardless of many not particularly advocating for his appointment.

What to expect from new Leicester City manager Russell Martin

Working on the theory that any head coach worth his salt must possess a three-way approach comprising dogma, doctrine and modus operandi, Martin presents a distinct blueprint. He is known as an extreme tactical fundamentalist, wherein his dogma remains the pursuit of total control through possession-based football.

Doctrine-wise, Martin is characterisable by a commitment to building from deep, aggressive Juego de Posición (which requires players to occupy specific zones to create oblique passing lanes). Alongside the utilisation of inverted full-backs, midfield overloads and a dedication to maintaining wing width.

With respect to the 40-year-old's apparent modus operandi (his method of application): pivoting on a match day from standard tactical management to an intense, high-focus exercise in emotional engineering. He actually informally outlined this M.O. to his men by declaring that if they do their jobs, they won't be berated!

The in-game manoeuvring is also known. Managing the 90 minutes and its immediate aftermath as a psychological shield, the Brighton-born boss endeavours to keep his players brave enough to execute his high-risk style by ignoring tactical criticism.

On Monday, June 29, Martin began installing these morals and sporting ethics upon the available Leicester personnel. 'Promising' is a word to tentatively employ here.

Though one nagging, negative aspect fails to subside regarding his insistence on playing out from the back. If the Saints team Martin relegated was comprised of a superior squad to the current City iteration, what chance has he of cultivating a competent, ball-playing defence at King Power Stadium?!

The only hope remains that Martin has learned the error of his ways. He must, finally, implement necessary on-field changes when confronted by adversity.
