The clock is ticking at King Power Stadium, and for the Leicester City hierarchy. Appointing a permanent manager is no longer a strategic preference - it is a survivalist must. Following a succession of disheartening, eye-opening results under poor old Andy King, the atmosphere in the East Midlands has grown toxic once again.
If a new leader is not in place by the next home game (Norwich City on February 28), the ownership will likely face a mutinous scenario from a fanbase that believes the LCFC identity is drifting into the abyss. Many in the Blue Army expect to drift down the English Football League.
Leicester City's managerial situation
While rumors continue to fly, three names can effectively be crossed off the list, according to Leicester Mercury. Russell Martin, in spite of being a bookmakers' favorite, is apparently a non-starter. The faithful have actually voiced their opposition to his 'possession at all costs' style anyway. Recent struggles at Rangers have done little to rehabilitate his image.
Michael Skubala has also seen links played down, as he remains committed to his promotion charge with Lincoln City and is unlikely to jump ship mid-season. The former PE teacher is considered an attractive options in some Leicestershire corners, however.
"Blackwell also plays down bookies’ links to Michael Skubala at Lincoln City, suggesting that Leicester City are unlikely to buy out a manager already under contract."The72 on Jordan Blackwell's comments
Meanwhile temporary placeholder and LCFC icon, King, isn't under consideration for the role. Not on a permanent basis.
In a perfect world, the Foxes would look toward the elite. Enzo Maresca remains the ideological gold standard after his previous success at the club. While Gareth Southgate represents the ultimate 'prestige' hire to reset the culture.
Nonetheless, both remain almost totally improbable. Maresca is currently eyeing the upper echelons of the Premier League after his Chelsea stint. In the meantime Southgate, while linked by speculators, is also likely holding out for a high-profile international or top-tier European project. The Foxes must act fast, but must also be realistic.
