Troy Deeney has made an unsurprising Steve Cooper sack claim, after Leicester came from behind to beat Southampton at the weekend.
Leicester City surprised everybody by beating Southampton at the weekend. They had an equal opportunity heading into the match but coming from two goals behind showed that Steve Cooper might have instilled a winning mentality into this Leicester team.
Of course, it is great for fans to see. Heading into the weekend, the Leicester fanbase was divided on Steve Cooper's appointment. Admittedly, he hadn't covered himself in glory at the start of the Premier League season.
So much so, that many saw the weekend's game as a final opportunity for Steve Cooper to prove himself. Among that crowd was Troy Deeney.
Troy Deeney makes unsurprising Steve Cooper sack claim for Leicester
According to Troy Deeney, Steve Cooper needed Leicester to beat Southampton. The former striker claimed that if the Foxes did not beat the Saints, Cooper would have been sacked.
In his own words, Deeney said: "I genuinely believe that had Leicester lost at Southampton their manager would have been sacked."
Troy Deeney then praised Steve Cooper for his ability to turn games around. He pinpointed key decisions from the sub's bench, which turned the game around.
Deeney added: "Cooper made changes at half-time, like he did at Arsenal, and in a few other games, and his team brought themselves back into it. It was a massive performance from his side in the second half to come from 2-0 down to win; a monstrous task that they took on with broad shoulders. Simply excellent."
Troy Deeney subsequently named Steve Cooper as his manager of the week. Big praise from Troy Deeney, who needs no introducing to Leicester fans (for obvious reasons).
The last few weeks (before the international break and after) were huge for Steve Cooper. He beat Bournemouth at home and then Southampton away from home. So, he has picked up six points on the bounce for the first time as Leicester City boss.
Now, the Foxes are 14th in the table. They have made some great progress and overturned their poor form at the start of the season. Hopefully, the current form will continue.
Leicester face Nottingham Forest in the next Premier League match. For local rivalry reasons, it is the fixture which every Leicester fan looks out for when the fixture list is announced. If Steve Cooper can beat his former side, he will seriously be in the good books of Leicester fans.
