The 2025/26 EFL Championship campaign without a doubt marked the worst season in the history of Leicester City Football Club, with the Foxes finishing second from bottom on just 46 points.Â
They finished the season with Gary Rowett in the hot seat, however that was only on a contract until the end of the season and after only two wins during his tenure and failing to keep the former Premier League winners up, it is unlikely his stay will be extended.
So that brings up the question: who will lead the club into next season with the ambition of returning straight back to the Championship?
Potential manager options for Leicester City
Despite the final game away at Blackburn Rovers being over a month ago, there have been no concrete links regarding a new Foxes manager as of yet. With a lot of transfer business expected to be done as many players are looking to exit the club, fans will be worried that if the manager appointment takes too long then the club may not be fully prepared for the third tier to begin.Â
Russell Martin
The former Southampton and Rangers manager has been a long term link with LCFC and it certainly looks a possibility that he could be taking a seat on the bench at King Power Stadium in August. It seems as if club Chief Football Officer, Jon Rudkin, is a fan of the kind of football that Martin looks to deploy with his teams, however he hasn’t exactly got a great track record in management and would probably be after a rather lucrative deal. Martin likes to play a possession based style that is often criticised for it's lack of speed in attacks.
Darren FergusonÂ
The son of one of the greatest ever managers in football history, Darren Ferguson, has been linked with the foxes for a few weeks. Ferguson has been out of work since leaving Peterborough United back in October and would bring an array of knowledge of League One with him to King Power Stadium. Similarly to Russell Martin, Ferguson likes to keep possession but aims to be on the front foot a bit more in possession.
Dave ChallinorÂ
Just two days ago it was confirmed that following the playoff final defeat, Dave Challinor and Stockport County decided to part ways. Challinor spent over five years at Stockport County taking them all the way from the National League to one game away from promotion to the Championship. He would certainly give Foxes fans a bit of excitement as it would be assumed he would have a stronger squad than he did at Stockport. Compared to the previous two managers, Challinor is a bit more of an adaptable manager that changes shape and tactics occasionally to combat opposition and get the best out of his side.
It is a nervous time for Leicester City fans as it remains to be seen what next season could bring and with how the club has been run in recent times, confidence in the higher ups such as Rudkin is definitely at a low.
