Russell Martin's official appointment as Leicester City manager on June 15, 2026 places him fourth among the youngest permanent bosses in the LE2 club's 142-year history. Taking charge at 40 years, five months and 11 days, the former Scotland player only sits behind three figures from the Foxes' formative and mid-twentieth century eras (from known records).

Jimmy Bloomfield remains the youngest man to take the role on a permanent basis on June 1971, aged 37 years and four months. His five-year tenure delivered consistent top-flight stability, two top-five finishes and runs to successive FA Cup semi-finals with progressive, attacking football.

Matt Gillies claimed second place when confirmed permanently in January 1959 after an initial caretaker spell, at just over 37 years old. He went on to become the club's longest-serving post-war manager, leading Leicester to its second major cup final and a league title challenge over 10 seasons.

Frank McLintock took the third spot when appointed in June 1977 at 37 years and five months of age. The one-time defender stepped straight from the dressing room into the hot seat, bringing sharp tactical insight to a squad in transition.

Frank O’Farrell follows Martin in fifth; appointed in December 1968 at 41 years and two months. He laid strong foundations before moving on to take charge of Manchester United three years later.

Enzo Maresca arrived in June 2023 aged 43 years and four, and delivered an immediate Championship title with a distinct, possession-focused style that reshaped the club’s playing identity.

Nigel Pearson completes the group, appointed permanently in June 2008 at 44 years and ten months, and later masterminded the famous 2014 promotion and laid groundwork for LCFC's greatest-ever triumph.

So that's the list of seven 'youthful' City gaffers. Martin, who built his reputation at MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton (but not Rangers). He secured a Premier League return via the 2024 play-offs.

Arriving with a clearly defined philosophy built on structured build-up, positional discipline and high-intensity pressing, the 40-year-old has already begun preseason preparations at Seagrave training complex. And practice has been demanding: with extended double sessions and rigorous fitness benchmarks set to build resilience for the rigours of League One.

Meanwhile six friendly fixtures are now arranged to test progress. Starting with a behind-closed-doors meeting with Northampton Town.

Further trips follow to Bristol Rovers and Burton Albion. Alongside outings against Malaga, Cadiz and finally Genoa at home.
