The disastrous 2025/26 season is now finally over for Leicester City.

The Foxes did close out a horrible campaign, which ended with the sting of back-to-back relegations being confirmed, with one final win, as the Midlands giants won 1-0 courtesy of Stephy Mavididi's 78th-minute strike.

Ultimately, though, other than it being a rare win for the Leicester away masses to savour, this victory meant nothing, with the planning for next season now underway.

Rumours seem to suggest that ex-Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson could be handed the reins if Leicester decides against handing Gary Rowett the permanent job heading into League One, but the Scotsman is far from being the only interesting name being tipped to take up a spot in the King Power hot-seat.

The manager rumour mill at Leicester

The rumour mill is churning out some notable names, that's for sure, with the recently sacked Burnley boss Scott Parker even tipped to take over the League One titans, despite being an overwhelming success in the Championship previously.

Alongside Parker being tentatively discussed, there are more left-field options also being talked about in the form of Dick Schreuder, who currently manages in his native Netherlands, alongside Alan Sheehan - who once played for the Foxes - further being in the supposed running as a former promising head coach at Swansea City.

There is also Ferguson's name that is constantly floating about as an option, which has been met with some scepticism from a disgruntled Leicester fanbase.

When you get past his status that he's Sir Alex Ferguson's son, which makes him a figure of supposed nepotism, the seasoned EFL manager might well be a far better appointment than first meets the eye, to try and correct Leicester's current mess.

Why Ferguson could be a better appointment than first meets the eye

From the get-go, it should probably be in writing that I am slightly biased when it comes to the four-time Peterborough manager, as I'm an ardent Posh fan, who has seen Ferguson at his very best.

Indeed, every promotion I've witnessed at Posh has had Ferguson at the heart of it, with the unemployed 54-year-old steering the Cambridgeshire side to four unbelievable promotions, three out of League One.

If Leicester wants a serial winner at the level, who knows how to get his teams playing free-flowing attacking football, they should look no further than giving the Glaswegian a chance, with a sublime 718 goals powered home, across 453 games as a third-tier boss.

Away from being a known promotion winner from this punishing level, he also had a reputation at London Road for being a manager who loved working alongside youth players, having been key to Harrison Burrows' rise from Posh youngster to Sheffield United regular, in just one standout example.

He could be just what is needed, again, for Leicester's changing look ahead of the brand-new League One campaign, with the likes of Jeremy Monga and Louis Page potentially becoming first-team regulars, to breathe life into a broken team.

He has struggled away from Peterborough in the past, notably with Preston North End in the Championship.

But, he is likely to be a stable pair of hands if he is given the nod to replace Rowett, with Leicester's stay in League One potentially short-lived, if the Scotsman steps into the fold imminently.
