Leicester City: The three best players so far
James Lassey’s picks
Kasper Schmeichel
Since his £1.5 million move from Leeds six years ago, Schmeichel has become one of the most experienced senior players the Foxes have at their disposal. This season, like campaigns before, he has stepped up his game with performances to savour. Even when Craig Shakespeare was in charge during Leicester’s difficult start, he has managed to retain five clean sheets in 14 appearances for club and country.
The Goalkeeper is among one of the few that if he became injured, it would have a detrimental effect on City’s results. The fact that the Dane has made the second most saves in the Premier League this season (30) highlights that the Foxes fortunes could be much worse. Especially with the struggles the already questionable Leicester defence have faced in recent times.
Next: Islam Slimani on his way out of Leicester City
The 30-year-old has made key stops to keep the Foxes in games, especially in the wins over Swansea and Everton. He was there to help Puel’s side come away with a point last time out against Stoke City with a world class injury time dive. If Leicester are going to continue their Premier League charge up the table, keeping Schmeichel fit will only improve their chances.
Demarai Gray
Having just signed a new deal until the end of 2021, Demarai Gray is one of Leicester’s most exciting prospects. While he has only scored two goals in his 13 appearances this season, his ability to dictate the momentum of a game is spectacular.
He is now on par with fellow winger Riyad Mahrez in becoming one of Leicester’s most dangerous attacking play-makers. The youngster has the potential to become a Leicester City great. If he continues to show the confidence to take on a man like he did in his previous two games, then the 21-year-old’s season will only escalate.
He single-handedly disposed of Everton with a cross-pitch run showing the Premier League the extent of both his pace and footballing mind. The only criticism of the winger is that he does not score as many as he should and that the form took so long to come. But hey, better late than never.
Jamie Vardy
The fact that Jamie Vardy only has six goals this season should come as a disappointment with regards to previous campaigns but its his career defining work rate and clinical nature that makes him so effective.
His most important attribute is his capability to shape a chance literally out of thin air. City have lost all four of their games against the Premier League top six this season, yet Vardy has scored in three of them. He continues to show his desire to infiltrate some of the league’s toughest defences.
