Leicester City captain Wes Morgan should be in the same position as Andy King, Danny Simpson

It seems strange that Claude Puel dismissed Danny Simpson and Andy King, but not Wes Morgan. Arguably Leicester City’s consistently worst and most accident prone player – Morgan is now completely out of his depth. Difficult as it is to admit, the odd commited challenge and block is not sufficient at elite level.

To be absolutely frank, many Leicester City fans do not understand manager Claude Puel’s thoughts with regards to Wes Morgan. Making him captain again – a lack of foresight. Starting him for all but one Premier League game – a mistake. Not removing him from the roster like Andy King and Danny Simpson – a strange, questionable decision.

On Saturday, the Morgan assessment came back to bite boss Puel and Leicester City severely. 4-0 down at a team like Bournemouth is not acceptable, at all. No disrespect to Eddie Howe’s quality Cherries, but the Foxes can defeat them. Typically, lcfc.com failed to address the incidents in their match report. Bias will achieve nothing.

If the plan set out by the owners and chief is to be executed, the staff must be ruthless. Morgan should have been up for sale or loan this past summer – as wilderness bound King and Simpson were. Stunningly, Puel still insists the skipper still has a “big role” to play, according to a recent account from Leicester Mercury.

Bournemouth away at the Vitality Stadium is, hopefully, the last chapter in Morgan’s career at Leicester City. Others in defence were below average, but the Jamaican was too, and has been for a long time. The former Nottingham Forest player would be more suited to a lesser division, if, he wants to continue playing.

It is obvious Morgan cannot feature at the King Power Stadium in important games again or more supporters will join the #PuelOut movement. His touch on the ball alone was never good but now seems nonexistent – which contributed to his dismissal.

Currently, Morgan is the fourth-best centre-back. Is this accurate? Well, naturally Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu are the defenders the ever informed Mr Tighe refers to. Whereas, some would say Filip Benkovic and even Yohan Benalouane would be preferable as well. Wow.

Sadly, something had to give in order to see the final change necessary from the 2015/16 champions. However, giving up three valuable points was not the ideal way to remove a poorly performing player. Let it not be forgotten that Morgan gives his all for the cause, a loyal and great leader – he is just simply not good enough anymore at age-34.

A question, more important than people’s views on the Leicester City captain, is: why does Claude Puel keep the faith in a player so clearly struggling? Especially with Evans on the bench; if the Northern Irishman is match fit.

This strategy or favouritism is Puel’s biggest mistake as the Foxes gaffer so far while at the King Power. Claude, you can drop a club captain! It seems so contradictory to keep this misguided faith, because the Frenchman values youth so much.

In all honesty, Foxes of Leicester conducted a thorough search of Wes Morgan mentions on Twitter and could not find one tweet in disagreement. Although, some, like above, thought Maguire rated lower. There are also others who believe Ricardo Pereira made more mistakes than Morgan – maybe so – but those two players will still be picked going forward and are usually excellent. Albeit Ricardo isn’t a defender.

Some people thought the second yellow card at the Vitality was undeserved: in fact there are two possible straight red cards by Morgan leading to his expulsion.

Etched into premiership and Leicester City history is his name. Yet, all good things come to an end. Surely it would be better for Morgan to move on now with great memories like the top-tier title win and the Champions League quarter-finals. Rather than more underperforming, loss of points, as well as a quality reputation diminishing. In addition to the feeling that even the player himself knows he’s become inadequate at this level.
