A new goalscorer stakes his claim in the Leicester City Under-23 side
Leicester City have some marvellous youthful prospects on the horizon at the King Power Stadium. The rise to prominence gives us the names: John Knight, Darnell Johnson, George Thomas, Hamza Choudhury and, now, Callum Wright.
In Monday’s draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. Wright netted to equalise the score with a fine striker’s header – impressive, as he is a midfielder by trade. The 18-year-old found himself again in a great position from veteran Danny Simpson’s cross.
Incidentally, Simpson is doing all he can to be promoted back into the senior roster and Leicester City boss Claude Puel‘s thoughts. Although, Daniel Amartey ‘stepped his game up’ versus Huddersfield Town.
When the former Manchester United defender’s floated long ball dropped, Wright pounced, scoring his second headed goal of the game – expertly, it has to be said. As a goalscoring central midfield player with a solid and useful head, he reminds me of Gus Poyet. That, is a fine comparison point.
LCFC development squad manager, Steve Beaglehole said:
"“I was delighted for Callum, with him being out for a long while, [he’s] a player that we invested in, [and] he got two brilliant goals, showed what he’s about.” (Via: lcfc.com)"
Continuing: “It was a very, very good game. That was a proper game. There was some good players in both sides.”
Above are the highlights from the draw on Monday evening.
Wright, who is versatile – playing right-back or left/right-midfield on occasion – spoke of his happiness in the Premier League 2 side, being at the club and in yesterday’s game:
"“Overall we’re happy with our performance.“I’m happy with the goals, obviously first start after injury, and missing preseason.“I was ready to come back and up for it, so happy with the two goals.”– Callum Wright (Via: lcfc.com)"
From Blackburn Rovers to Leicester City
Following an imposing short career in Blackburn Rovers’ development squad during the 2017/18 campaign, Leicester City pounced. Rovers did “everything they could”, to keep the player, according to Leicester Mercury.
In addition, other premiership teams had an interest in the starlet. Consequently Leicester City ensured they would not miss out on the Liverpudlian, signing him on a three-year deal.
Puel isn’t just monitoring the Under-23 team, he attends every game possible at Holmes Park. Wright has done his chances of future progression under the Frenchman a service, against Brighton. Youth development is a Puel staple, ever since helping a young Eden Hazard.
