Danny Ward comments on his heroics for Leicester City in the League Cup
Leicester City defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers via penalties on Tuesday evening, in the League Cup at Molineux. The Foxes’ star performer was second choice goalkeeper Danny Ward; he spoke of his enjoyment:
Wolves versus Leicester City was a decent game for a Carabao Cup affair which ended 0-0. However, knowledge that those matches go directly to a penalty shootout, lends a sense of nervousness and anticipation to an already tense sport.
Certain King Power players did themselves no harm with quality displays: Vicente Iborra and Danny Ward in particular. Spanish, deep-playmaker Iborra ran the show in midfield; classy and effective throughout.
One masterstroke was Iborra’s beautifully floated pass to Jamie Vardy – whom could not convert the fantastic chance. Iborra, ironically, should have finished at least one of his openings.
Ward was also excellent. In addition to some important stops in regular time, he made three superb saves from penalties. Handing an opportunity to Kelechi Iheanacho to win the tie; he dispatched emphatically, putting Leicester City into the Carabao Cup Fourth Round. The draw takes place on Saturday at 9pm BST.
Following the final whistle, the former Liverpool stopper spoke to lcfc.com about his achievement and aspirations in the competition:
"“I thought we should have won the game in the 90 minutes to be honest.“I don’t think it would have been fair on the boys if we would have lost out and thankfully we came out on the right side of it.“As I have said before, in penalty shoot-outs it’s my job to save them and my heroes are the boys who put them in the back of the net.“There isn’t [any pressure] until Christian [Fuchs] misses that first penalty!“You’ve got to go in with the belief that you’re going to go the right way and save it, otherwise there is no point in standing there.“You’ve got to back the boys as well and have the faith in them to put it in the back of the net.“This is massive for us, we want to take this competition seriously, we want to go as far as we can, it’s not a training exercise, we do that on the pitch at the training ground.”– Danny Ward"
Sadly for Ward, it will be a monumental struggle to dislodge Kasper Schmeichel as Leicester City’s number one. The Dane has been the first choice for years now and, generally, is one of the first names on the team sheet; while almost considered untouchable. How refreshing, reassuring and comfortable the Foxes are with two pairs of safe hands.
