Leicester face competition from EPL side to land Turkey winger
With only three weeks until the transfer window closes, Leicester City will be hoping to bring in one or two new faces to the club.
Timothy Castagne is currently the only player to arrive at Leicester City this summer, a £24 million transfer from Atalanta. With Ben Chilwell being the only noticeable departure at the club, Brendan Rodgers will be hoping he can add more depth to his squad before the October 5 deadline.
A name that has joined the list of players linked with a move to the Leicester is Cengiz Under. The Roma winger has been approached by Newcastle United, according to Inside Futbol, with Rodgers’ men keeping tabs on the Turkey winger.
With both the Magpies and Leicester only keen on a loan move, negotiations will have to perfectly due to the Italian side preferring to bring money in.
Leicester, who failed to complete their quest for UEFA Champions League football last season, will be looking to bring one or two faces in and Under could be one of them.
Whilst Newcastle have already purchased Ryan Fraser, Jamal Lewis and Callum Wilson, players who were all linked with a move to King Power Stadium.
Only 23-years-old, Under signed for Roma in 2017 from Istanbul Basaksehir and has made 70 appearances in Serie A, scoring 13 goals. Predominately a right-winger, he is capable to feature on the left, where he has contributed to 13 goals in 27 games.
But why are Roma willing to sell the winger, whose contract doesn’t expire for another three years?
Last season, he missed seven league games due to a bicep femoris muscle injury, before going 10 games without a goal or assist. Only managing 3 league goals is a worrying sign, despite only having nine shots on target.
The 2018 Turkish footballer of the year could remain in Serie A if Newcastle or Leicester fail to meet the valuation, with Napoli showing interested.
Roma are keen to bring Arkadiusz Milik in from Napoli, with Under potentially being included in the offer for a swap deal. However, Giallorossi remains distant from Napoli’s asking price.
When he arrived in Italy, Under was labelled a ‘wonder kid’ and ‘one to watch for the future’, however, after not impressing much at Roma, the signing of him would not really improve on the current crop of wingers at Leicester City.
Demarai Gray, Harvey Barnes, Marc Albrighton and Ayoze Perez currently compete for the two winger positions in Rodgers’ side, with all four failing to provide a similar goal tally to what Riyad Mahrez offered.
Leicester will be desperate to add another wide man to their squad, but a player who can provide more goals than Barnes or Perez will be preferred.
