Following a 3-0 drubbing for his team, West Bromwich Albion boss Sam Allardyce paid Leicester City pretty much the ultimate footballing commendation.

It struck me yesterday, while watching the Foxes demolish West Brom at King Power Stadium, that Allardyce must have been one of the inspirations for Mike Bassett England Manager. And I mean that as a genuine nod to his caricature in the game and obvious pedigree for evading the dreaded drop.

Being a master of relegation escapology isn’t the 66-year-old’s most notable achievement, and I’m not talking about being a proponent of the four-four-f-ing-two system; I just checked and he’s evolved to 4-4-1-1, exotic.

‘Big Sam’ was, in fact, the England head coach once upon a time. And he had a 100 per cent win record. Yeah, that’s true. He only managed one game due to the escapologist failing to get out of a sticky situation, but all the same! Although it was found that there was no wrongdoing, after leaving the England job.

Being an international boss gives the Baggies chief a keen insight into football, and Leicester fans will be delighted with Allardyce’s comparison.

As you can see by the tweet above from journalist Jordan Blackwell, Allardyce is an admirer of LCFC. This quote came directly after the final whistle.

To be placed in the same bracket as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City by a man who’s seen it all in the sport is a very nice tribute from Allardyce. I’m sure it won’t go amis with Brendan Rodgers, either. And it is especially polite to do so after being defeated 3-0 and being completely let-down by an uncommitted defence.
