Every Leicester star representing their country at EURO2020
By Jake Raynes
Leicester City are well represented at this years European championships despite having no players in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, here’s where you can catch the Foxes in action over an action packed month of football.
Leicester City’s Turkey contingent
Leicester will be represented on the opening night of the tournament (Friday 11th of June) as dark horses Turkey take on a typically solid Italian side. Caglar Söyüncü has become a household name for The Crescent-Stars and should get the nod for a start on Friday night. Söyüncü will be joined in the squad by Cengiz Ünder who looks unlikely to return to the East Midlands after a stop start loan spell but may make an appearance from the bench for his country.
Turkey play their remaining group games against Wales on the 16th and Switzerland on the 20th of June as Cags and co look to progress from a difficult group.
Wales
Also competing in Group A, Leicester shot stopper Danny Ward looks set to take the starting spot for his country after another season backing up Kasper Schmeichel. Ward saved a Benzema penalty against tournament front runners France in a friendly last week and appears to have secured the job as Wales number one. This should hopefully provide fans a good opportunity to watch Leicester’s capable back up in action.
The Dragons begin their campaign on Saturday the 12th against Switzerland and play their remaining group games against Söyüncü’s Turkey on16th and group favourites Italy on the the 20th of June.
Belgium
Leicester are very well represented in group B, particularly in the form of Belgian trio Youri Tielemans, Timothy Castagne and Dennis Praet. Belgium have selected the most Foxes out of any country in this years tournament and will have plenty of closet supporters in the Leicester community, particularly with star man Tielemans nailed on to start.
Castagne has provided a selection headache for manager Roberto Martinez and is pushing Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Meunier for the starting right back spot. While Praet looks set to cover his Leicester teammate Tielemans from the bench as he has done for the club this season but should get plenty of minutes with De Bruyne coming back from a nasty eye injury.
The Red Devils start their Euro journey against Russia on Saturday the 12th of June before taking on Denmark on the 17th and first time participants Finland on the 21st as Youri and co bid to justify their label as group favourites.
Denmark
A well balanced Denmark side will be looking to steal top spot from Leicester’s Belgian contingent and have another Foxes’ fan favourite amongst their ranks in the form of club captain Kasper Schmeichel. Kasper has been one of the first names on the team sheet for years now and sits behind a very strong Danish defence who will be determined to maintain their impressive clean sheet percentage.
De rød-hvide will aim to get off to a good start against outsiders Finland on the 12th before a potential group decider on the 17th followed by what the Dane’s hope won’t be their final game of the tournament against Russia on Monday the 21st of June.
