Tielemans signing a brief contract extension is best for Leicester
For Leicester City the last six months have been plagued with constant rumours around the contract situation and potential departure of Youri Tielemans.
This talk only increased in volume and reputability once the transfer window officially opened on the 1st of June. However, since the frontrunners to sign the 25-year-old Belgian acquired the services of Fabio Vieira for an alleged £34-million-pounds from FC Porto, the interest round Tielemans appears to have cooled a little. The Gunners are seemingly prioritising other positions. Thusly leaving the midfield dynamo in somewhat of a transfer limbo.
A writer for the Daily Express told GiveMeSport that the deal of Tielemans was in fact further away as it seemed:
"“I was told not to write about Tielemans anymore with Arsenal and that it was very much agent-driven and has never been as close as has been suggested”."
If we are to believe that this is now the case, it is highly likely that the Belgian international will be a Leicester player come the start of the 2022/23 season. If this is to occur, it is also more than plausible that City require him to sign a contract extension with the club to make sure that Leicester’s number eight is not allowed to walk away for free at the climax of the next campaign.
This potentially could be the club’s signing of the window as if LCFC can place a release clause into the contract extension, they can ensure they do not have a repeat of this current window of clubs lowballing due to Tielemans priorities of playing in the Champions League, which at this point in the players career is completely understandable.
But if a substantial release clause is placed in the extension this would mean that the midfielder will have to play up to that price tag, and anyone who has witnessed a motivated Tielemans knows how beneficial that will be to City. Even if he is to leave at the end of next season it will give the Foxes another year to find his replacement – with the help of an increased budget – and another season of a determined Tielemans help push for a European place.
