Things to know about Leicester transfer target Abdul Fatawu Issahaku
With the transfer window nearing it’s end, Leicester City and Enzo Maresca are keen on bringing in left-footed 19-year-old winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku from Sporting Lisbon. This would be City’s seventh signing of the window and would be an extremely welcomed one in that. With the current squad severely lacking depth in that position.
The Daily Mail have reported that the Ghana international will likely be brought in to the East Midlands club on loan with an option to buy of around £12 million. Issahaku signed a five-year-deal with the Portuguese club back in 2022 from Ghanaian club Steadfast FC.
The right-winger made a total of six appearances in the Liga Portugal as well as being capped for his national side 14 times. Despite signing a long-term deal recently, Issahaku is seemingly not in the plans of Sporting manager Ruben Amorim.
It does seem to be unusual that a player of whom had a €60 million release placed into their contract just a year ago is now out of favour at the club and on their way out. The Ghanaian first caught clubs eyes when he was named player of the tournament of the under 20’s African Cup of Nations.
Issahaku went on to make his debut for the senior national side at the age of just 17. So when Sporting Lisbon came in for the wide player, it was no surprise despite the fact Issahaku was playing in the Ghanaian second division at the time.
With Maresca being on record saying that he would like to bring in another three signings in before the window closes, this transfer does seem imminent and desperately needed for the Foxes. This is due to the fact that the only first team options available in that position are players with little to no senior experience. In this Maresca system the wide player must be able to be effective in “1 vs 1’s”, like Stehphy Mavididi. A player with the profile such a Issahaku is vital for the sustainable success of Leicester City.
