A journalist who writes for controversial media outlet The Sun has made a wild and slightly annoying claim about Leicester City Football Club. Seemingly, the writer didn't do his due diligence, or homework, before making such a baseless an unnecessarily worrying declaration for the East Midlands outfit's Blue Army fan base. Unfortunately, Alan Nixon suggested that the King Power side were currently banned from making any expenditure (paid for signings). He said this due to an old and now defunct transfer embargo the Foxes were involved in around a year or so ago. That followed English Football League penalties, along with the Premier League citing supposed rule breaking.
However, it appears that Nixon was wrong, thankfully. And I'm obviously all too happy to explain what the realty is, where he went wrong and if the mistake was possibly intentional disinformation. I'll also offer an assessment on whether or not the Leicestershire team will look to sign any players without loaning or for free.
Are City really banned from making signings due to a falsely reported transfer embargo? Or have The Sun inadvertently or deliberate produced spurious claims again? Let's have a look at what's happening on Filbert Way.
Fake Leicester City news or a created false narrative?
Don't worry, Foxes. According to this piece and anything I can find or see on the official EFL Championship website, LCFC is not under a transfer prohibition at the moment.
"There are currently no Clubs under embargo."EFL.com
The site actually states "There are currently no Clubs under embargo" in the division. In fact, only Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City are even restricted at present.
"Nixon claimed that ‘Leicester are not allowed to spend under their current restrictions – with a points penalty due to come their way’."EFL Analysis
Back in 2023/24, Leicester were reportedly under a imposed ban. Though limitations were removed when they reentered the Premier League.
Sometimes a story or account is falsified or altered by accident. Occasionally, subterfuge is calculated. There is no telling whether Nixon merely had a poor source. There is, though, another existing rumour stating the EFL must 'sign-off' on Leicester business.
