Harry Winks arrived at Leicester City with a big reputation from Tottenham Hotspur. However, his tenure at the King Power eventually turned sour. He will not be missed by Foxes supporters, as he has now joined Cagliari.
One Leicester fan wrote on Reddit, "This is great news for the player and our squad." Others used phrases with more expletives. Whilst another supporter wrote, "I wonder if he’ll enjoy Sardinia. And the commute there."
Winks was dropped by Ruud van Nistelrooy after a falling out over the player's commute from Hertfordshire to Leicester. This coincided with the Foxes' relegation from the Premier League.
The midfielder's first season with Leicester was largely successful. He played 45 Championship matches under Enzo Maresca as the Foxes won the division. However, Maresca departed for Chelsea following their promotion.
Winks has now suffered back-to-back relegations with the Foxes. Last season, he was also involved in a spat with Leicester fans after a defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park. The incident was filmed, and the player got a lot of condemnation across social media. This turned into a symbol of Leicester's demise.
It is best that both Harry Winks and Leicester City have gone seperate ways
Winks has played in Italy before, as he was on loan at Sampdoria from Tottenham. He played 20 games for the Serie A side during the 2022/23 campaign. However, he also suffered relegation with them.
It is quite remarkable that Cagliari are taking a chance on Winks given his record in recent seasons. However, he is still only 30, and his experience could be valuable for the Serie A side. They finished in 14th place last season and will be looking to push on from their mid-table finish.
As for Leicester, they now have Russell Martin at the helm as they look to climb out of League One. It is a remarkable fall from grace for the club that won the Premier League during the 2015/16 season. Martin knows the EFL well, having helped Southampton to promotion from the Championship.
As a player, Martin also gained promotion from League One with both Norwich City and Peterborough United. More of Leicester's big-name players will also depart this summer. Wout Faes, Abdul Fatawa, and Harry Souttar have all been linked with other clubs.
Martin has a big job on his hands to replace these players. He also needs to rebuild his reputation after being sacked midway through Southampton's last season in the Premier League. This was followed by a disastrous stint in charge of Rangers.
