It would be a dream come true for the Blue Army if Jamie Vardy returned to Leicester City Football Club this summer, and that sentiment is surely undeniable across the entire fan base. Making the matter acutely worse, is that City do not currently possess even one proven and recognised striker anywhere on their first-team roster - a gaping hole that demands immediate attention!
After Vardy departed for Italian side Cremonese just over a year ago, Patson Daka and Jordan Ayew stepped forward as the senior central forwards on Filbert Way, a situation that immediately caused concern among those watching closely. Indeed, the LCFC faithful were proved right to fret over the quality and reliability of that attacking pair, whose respective spells with the Foxes could only be described as deeply unsuccessful affairs.
Mercifully, both Daka and Ayew have now moved on from King Power Stadium, clearing the decks but leaving behind a troubling void where goals ought to be found. Yet it begs the uncomfortable question of whether this was actually a case of 'better the devil you know', given there is no obvious replacement or experienced marksman waiting in the wings to step up.
Further complicating the landscape is the widely reported news that The King Power International Group has supposedly placed the club up for sale, casting a shadow of uncertainty over whether fresh investment will still materialise in this window. Hopefully chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha (known as "Top") possesses the foresight and ethics to understand he cannot leave such a vital area of the squad threadbare; past experiences make that scenario far from a certainty.
Earlier this week, manager Russell Martin confirmed to Leicester Mercury that he anticipates further incomings and outgoings in the coming weeks, a statement that may offer a temporary salve to restless supporters. Even so, the one outcome fans crave above all others, the homecoming of Vardy, appears highly improbable, with the former England international having recently drawn a line under that particular chapter of his story.
