Leicester's ultimate top ten players ever: Goalkeepers, No.10-6
The Foxes have been blessed with some of the very best goalkeepers and we are really spoilt for choice in compiling a list of the top ten. We start our count down today with numbers ten to six.
10. To add some immediate controversy to the proceedings I include Mads Hermansen, the current incumbent, in tenth position. I admit this rating is based on potential rather than achievement, although few would dispute that the 23-year-old Danish keeper has a big future ahead of him. After excelling in Enzo Maresca’s team last term, Mads has made a great start to the current campaign starring with save after save particularly in the recent defeat against Arsenal. It is vital for the Foxes to hold on to him, although I suspect Chelsea will be circulating the King Power again at some point.
9. Ninth on the list is Johnny Anderson who played 277 games for Leicester between 1948 and 1960 conceding only 488 goals. He was one of the many members of City’s Scottish contingent at the time winning one full cap for his country. He was a member of two Foxes’ sides that won promotion in 1954 and 1957. His career at City was cut short by the emergence of Gordon Banks in the late 1950s. On retiring from football he worked in his own painting and decorating business.
8. In eighth place is a much-underestimated Leicester keeper. Kevin Poole played 193 times for the Foxes between 1991 and 1997. He conceded only 278 goals making him the eighth most successful Leicester goalkeeper in terms of that metric. Signed from Middlesborough by Brian Little at the age of 28, Poole played in two second tier play-off finals winning one (against Palace) and conceding a last-minute winning penalty by Swindon in the other. Not the tallest of keepers he more than made up for that by his considerable agility as a shot-stopper. Following the play-off victory Poole was replaced by Kasey Keller for the 1996/7 Premiership season.
7. Seventh on our list is Ian Walker, the former Spurs keeper. who made 156 appearances for the Foxes between 2001 and 2005 conceding only 205 goals in the process. He was the top performer in a struggling side led by Peter Taylor destined for relegation and an ever-present in the side that regained its Premier League status (at least for a season) under Micky Adams. Like a number of the names on this list, Walker was a better shot-stopper than a collector of crosses.
6. High on the list of successful Leicester keepers was Kasey Keller, the American international goalkeeper, who was signed by Martin O’Neil from Millwall in 1996. An excellent shot-stopper, but sometimes vulnerable to crosses, Keller played 125 times for the Foxes, 99 of them in the Premier League, conceding a miserly 143 goals. He made his name with a brilliant performance in the League Cup final replay against Middlesborough in 1997. He eventually moved to Spurs and it was he that conceded the last ever league goal at Filbert Street scored by Matt Piper. The series continues on Tuesday.
