A look back at Leicester's title-winning team - Where are they now?

“Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we are gone, and wonder who we were, how bravely we fought, how fiercely we loved?” said the Greek warrior Achilles.

Pinch them, for they still might be dreaming. That year was indeed a dream. Perhaps beyond it. Nobody had thought it would happen; the world did not plan to witness it, and Leicester City themselves may not have imagined going that far. But it happened. Magic does happen, after all, doesn’t it?

The calendar turned 2016, and that year changed this club forever. They etched their name on the wall they had always looked at from the bottom. Oh, what a tale it was, a tale of valour and might. A tale to tell your kids about, a tale to find love in, a tale to tell the world that sport is a game of underdogs, and will always remain so.

To play is to be known, and that is what the famed Leicester City team of 2016 did. And how beautifully they did it. Almost a decade later, we reflect on those men in royal blue, who they were, and where they went.

A look back at Leicester's title-winning team - Where are they now?

Claudio Ranieri had gems on his plate, and he adorned them as such. Kasper Schmeichel, Danny Simpson, Wes Morgan, Robert Huth, Christian Fuchs, Marc Albrighton, N’Golo Kanté, Danny Drinkwater, Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, and Shinji Okazaki, these names comprise the best of the men who brought the Premier League crown to the King Power Stadium. Here, we attempt to trace the trajectory of their careers ever since.

1. Kasper Schmeichel

We do not talk enough about this man. He played all 38 games that Leicester competed in to win the league, and his contribution, though it stands at the back of all the goals, should not go unnoticed. Schmeichel kept 15 clean sheets that season, a simple change in which could have drastically altered the course of the final event.

Schmeichel conceded only 36 goals, that is fewer than the number of games he started. Isn’t that remarkable? Leicester, at the time, were not a team that relied much on possession, so the goalkeeper had to endure challenges far more frequently than one might expect. The defensive stability the Danish No. 1 brought out of his gloves was immense, and it deserves a prominent place in any conversation about that campaign.

Where is he in 2025? The son of Peter Schmeichel stayed with the Foxes until 2022 before moving across OGC Nice, Anderlecht, and Celtic until 2024. Currently, he remains an important leader in the Scottish Premiership for Celtic, adding a fresh tally of trophies to his name.

2. Danny Simpson

Simpson had to constantly repair a few scratches in his game throughout the season, but at the end of the day, his performance was entirely positive. He maintained consistency and stood largely tall against some really tough opponents who could have cost Leicester the title if Simpson had not acted as he did.

Where is he in 2025? Danny, like many of his teammates, moved around a few clubs thereafter. He joined Huddersfield Town in 2019 and later played for Bristol City. The 38-year-old fullback is now enjoying retirement, having hung up his boots last year. He remains a truly unforgettable name from that remarkable period.

3. Wes Morgan

O Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done, the prize we sought is won.

Morgan played every second of the Premier League campaign, and nobody could have done it better than him. He guided the team from many challenges and was a singular driving force in reconnecting the defense with the midfield and attack, something Leicester had lacked the season before.

In tight games against teams like Arsenal and Manchester City, Morgan was often the difference maker despite the team conceding multiple goals. He was in charge of team morale and, while he performed excellently, he ensured others on his side performed even better.

Where is he in 2025? Morgan has retired from professional football but remains actively involved in coaching.

4. Robert Huth

Huth provided Leicester with the edge needed to maintain consistency over 38 games. His experience at Chelsea and other top clubs brought immense quality to the backline. Though he made a few slips, his contribution in preventing dangerous last-minute goals cannot be forgotten.

Where is he in 2025? Huth retired from professional football after leaving Leicester in 2018. His final seasons were affected by injuries.

5. Christian Fuchs

Fuchs was an idea that delivered solid returns. Often described as an all-rounder, his defense was strong, and he was effective in advancing the ball.

What Fuchs brought most was determination. The Austrian came from the Bundesliga with experience and overlapping skills that worked well in Germany and ultimately helped Leicester win the Premier League trophy.

Where is he in 2025? Fuchs has retired from playing football. He later joined MLS side Charlotte FC as part of the coaching staff, where his methods were well received. As a manager, Fuchs could have done very well because he possesses a footballing vision that many do not.

6. Marc Albrighton

Albrighton was probably the brightest and most mature winger or midfielder Leicester City had in their armoury, though I still believe he was not used to the best of his abilities. He was the main link between defense and attack, and the team often looked lost in his absence.

His accuracy on crosses and the depth he provided were second to none, which is why he was as regular as other big names. Albrighton was perhaps the most versatile in the squad, able to perform well in many positions, and he had a unique ability to create chances from spaces that many others could not see.

Where is he in 2025? After the 2016 triumph, Albrighton stayed with Leicester until 2024. At 34 years old, he announced his retirement from football. I would argue that he could have continued for a few more years and remained a highly valuable player despite any criticism.

7. N’Golo Kante

Kante was the name that earned the most fame after his stellar season. Signed in 2015, he proved to Leicester that he was their best investment. Both literally and metaphorically, he was central to everything the foxes achieved that season.

Known as the engine of the club, Kante was also the heart, combining stamina, work ethic, and humility in a rare package.

Where is he in 2025? After winning the Premier League with Leicester, Kante moved to Chelsea, where he further established himself. As of 2025, he plays in the Saudi Pro League with Al Ittihad, sharing the field with some of the most accomplished veterans he earned trophies and fame alongside.

8. Danny Drinkwater

Leicester holds a special place for Danny Drinkwater, perhaps more than he realizes.

Danny served as the balancing partner to Kante. While Kante took risks and pushed forward, Drinkwater covered for him. In this partnership, Kante was the flashy element, and Drinkwater was the lesser-known backbone.

The highlight of that season was undoubtedly the goals Drinkwater produced, especially the 82nd-minute equaliser against Chelsea on match day 38, which helped formally seal the Premier League title for Leicester.

Where is he in 2025? Drinkwater’s career after Leicester did not reach the same heights. Injuries and inconsistent performances hampered his time at other clubs. As of 2025, he no longer plays professional football. He has chosen a new career path as a construction site worker, citing a period of limbo after his football career ended and a need to find purpose elsewhere.

9. Riyad Mahrez

Mahrez was a spectacle on the field. His goals combined precision, flair, and clever ball control in a way few players could match.

With 17 goals and 11 assists in the 2015-16 season, Mahrez propelled Leicester toward the Premier League title that few had imagined possible. He was the magician who made that historic season magical.

Where is he in 2025? Mahrez left Leicester for Manchester City in 2018 and became one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted players at the Etihad. He won the Premier League a few more times and, as of 2025, plays for Saudi side Al Ahli.

10. Jamie Vardy

The man, the myth, the legend. It is The Jamie Vardy. The Englishman was the top scorer of the Premier League that season with 24 goals. Every game, every chance, every space, you would see Vardy appear out of nowhere and strike the ball into the net with ultimate precision. He remains one of the most clinically gifted strikers of this generation.

More than his goals, Vardy was a relentless presser, often creating additional opportunities that were difficult to produce. He had hunger, focus, and a no-nonsense approach, coming in, doing what he had to do, and leaving without much noise.

Where is he in 2025? At the end of the last season, Vardy announced his departure from Leicester, joining Serie A side Cremonese on a free transfer. At 38 years old, he is expected to play only a few more seasons before hanging up his boots. He is clearly one of the greatest Leicester legends.

11. Shinji Okazaki

Although his goal contribution was not as high as Vardy’s, Okazaki was a crucial catalyst for the team. He was a silent creator whose off-the-ball runs and work rate helped generate important chances, playing a significant role in Leicester’s march toward the league title.

He acted as a support striker, relieving pressure from Vardy and creating the spaces that allowed the English striker to thrive. The movement and opportunities Okazaki opened were vital for both the team and Vardy.

Where is he in 2025? Okazaki left Leicester in 2019 and had a few short spells with other clubs that were not particularly successful. The Japanese international retired from professional football in February 2024.
