We have quite significant, fairly encouraging yet simultaneously slightly worrying news for Leicester City fans as we head into the first weekend of June. Domestic football and even preseason friendlies are a fair way off at present. Although City have already made a few changes; further alterations are definitely on the horizon at King Power Stadium and at Seagrave training centre too. Incoming and outgoing transfers will eventually transpire; before now only three Foxes were released.
We will, of course, briefly discuss all those elements within this piece. However, the focus of this LCFC article concerns something else. A supposedly unwanted Leicester player (with regards to fans and management) has made a brave statement. The centre back courageously vowed to help the Foxes re-enter the Premier League. While others will seek moves away from the East Midlanders as well as the Championship - this out of favour footballer commits himself selflessly.
So, who is the defender who might have left immediately this summer, if not before? Why is he out in the Leicestershire wilderness? And, most importantly, why on earth would he choose to devote himself to a club whose fan base is not particularly keen on his continued service?
Unwanted Leicester City player Jannik Vestergaard bravely devotes himself to Foxes cause
This story certainly alters perceptions. It caught my eye for several reasons. First of all, I expected Vestergaard to leave Leicester as I have for a few offseasons. Secondly, I was surprised at his seeming devotion to City.
I imagine he is expecting Ruud van Nistelrooy to be sacked. The pair supposedly fell out over the Dane's refusal to join in away fixture preparations.
"In the situation I have found myself in, I have tried to park my ego,” he said.Vestergaard
I did not want to cause a stir, because there have been things that were more important than me personally. My intention was in no way to create a bad atmosphere.
That’s why I’ve also trained well, been there for my teammates and done what I could to help the club. I haven’t heard anything else from Leicester, so I expect to continue. Not least in light of the fact that I have two years left on my contract,
My focus is on the fact that I have two years and will do everything to help the club back to the Premier League."
Though I have criticised the Ex-Southampton man plenty, I admire the willingness here. He also provided further negative insight into the modern LCFC. The Denmark international's had literally no contact since the season ended. This organisation needs to wake up!
