Fabrizio Romano, and others from reputable outlets such as The Athletic and The Telegraph, have all confirmed that Arsenal were comically and questionably hijacked by Manchester City over the prospective signing of Leicester City Academy star Jeremy Monga. The Gunners did not wish to meet the Foxes hierarchy’s asking price, so Enzo Maresca (who, of course previously managed the East Midlanders and knows the precocious talent well) intelligently and ruthlessly swooped; as has become the Italian's established modus operandi in the sport!

Romano's official update confirms a full agreement is now in place between Manchester City, Leicester City and the player, with the total package valued at around £10-12 million. The deal was secured only after extended discussions with Arsenal failed to yield a breakthrough.

Maresca's 'personal presentation of a long-term development plan' at the Etihad ultimately and reportedly proved decisive in swaying negotiations City's way. Now, with senior football correspondents including Sam Wallace, David Ornstein and Rob Tanner all weighing in on the finer details, the question turns to precisely when this transfer will be formally ratified.

Jeremy Monga from Leicester City to Manchester City forecast

Tanner's exemplary reporting for The Athletic has already established that Monga put pen to paper on a pre-agreed conditional professional contract some time ago, an arrangement that sets the exact timeline and legal framework for every step that follows. This pre-signed commitment is locked in to officially activate on his 17th birthday, which falls on 10 July 2026; that date should dictate every part of the process moving forward.

"Monga has committed to a one-year scholarship deal beginning on his 16th birthday, on July 10, which is set to automatically turn into a professional contract when he turns 17 in 13 months’ time."

The terms mean he cannot simply walk away or sign as a pro' elsewhere in order to bypass the King Power hold. The organisation's pre-existing agreement apparently takes full legal precedence and triggers automatically without further negotiation.

Because that contract is guaranteed to come into force, Leicester retain full registration rights to Monga as a senior footballer, rather than merely as a youth prospect. Any club seeking to acquire his services must therefore negotiate a standard club-to-club transfer to buy out those existing terms, rather than relying on potentially lower, fixed compensation fees set by independent tribunals.

This carefully structured mechanism was purpose-built by Leicester to avoid repeating the circumstances that saw elite graduates Trey Nyoni and Tyrese Noubissie depart for Liverpool and the Citizens (dis)respectively for relatively modest sums. The £10m-plus package agreed effectively constitutes a buyout: all formalities could be finalised and the transfer officially completed on or around the 11th of this month.
