Leicester City fans were right to be simultaneously excited and surprised at their link with a prospective transfer for Crystal Palace man, Justin Devenny. He has certainly made his name for club and country over the past couple of seasons, demonstrating quality that naturally piques the interest of certain scouting departments.
Coming through the ranks initially at Kilmarnock before refining his craft at Airdrieonians, Devenny eventually secured a significant move to Crystal Palace in 2023. He has since blossomed into a young international for Northern Ireland, and already holds an impressive trophy haul, including an FA Cup winners' medal, a Community Shield title and lifted the UEFA Conference League as well.
While the Foxes will soon undoubtedly require many recruits, the reality of the significant squad transformation occurring at King Power Stadium suggests that luring established, or up-and-coming, Premier League and national team representatives will probably be a step too far. Financial prudence remains the order of the day, making such an ambitious acquisition, and wages, difficult to reconcile with the current structural rebuild.
Justin Devenny an unlikely Leicester City arrival
However, Devenny would of course be an ideal incoming player for the East Midlands outfit, especially following the departure of Jordan James. While some might consider him slightly overrated for a 22-year-old in the best division in the world, he possesses a level of tactical adaptability that is often overlooked.
The Eagle can comfortably play in about four positions, with the attacking midfield role seemingly being his most suited and prevalent, yet he can also provide cover at left wing-back and across the wing. His diminutive size and baby face probably combine to confuse casual journalists, but he is actually of a mature age to truly kick on now and not a mere 'prospect'.
Although inconsistency in form have clearly rendered his role at Selhurst Park under scrutiny or threat, it remains to be seen if the athlete will commit to a new deal amidst an uncertain future in South London. Nevertheless, personal ambition and success mean he is extremely unlikely to move to Leicestershire, regardless of speculation pushed by The Sun's Alan Nixon.
"Devenny, 22, is on the fringes of the Palace squad, and could be allowed to leave this summer, with Championship clubs and Leicester all reportedly interested in signing him."FLW
If Devenny cannot find an EPL side to take him on as a utility footballer, Nixon declares that various EFL Championship teams are circling with intent. Frankly, League One feels far too lowly for a player of this calibre; hopefully yours truly is proven wrong in this assessment and Devenny arrives in LE2.
