Leicester City: Update from boss on Sidnei Tavares’ contract

Leicester City management needs to sort out Sidnei Tavares’ messy contract situation soon before any other clubs instigate a free snatch.

The 19-year old has managed to display a few moments of brilliance in his impressive debut for the Foxes against Brighton, last weekend. He had a great shot on target in the first half of that match but at times looked a bit lost. In addition to giving up possession many times, which is expected for a young player for his debut at this level. For that, he was substituted by Marc Albrighton in the 72nd minute.

The good thing was that the player still looks hungry to strive and improve. Sure his promotion to the first team was indeed a presented opportunity catalyzed due to the lack of several crucial attack-minded players mostly being out injured. Tavares also gets an extra bit of recognition over his fellow Leicester City academy players, as he is the cousin of the former Manchester United footballer Nani.

Having already made his debut in European competitions and in the Premier League, he now has his eminence on full display to a wider range of spectators on a global scale. This surely means a lot of club scouts keeping a close eye out for the Portuguese’s contract situation. The young player’s deal would expire this summer.

The player would be looking forward to Leicester City’s new offer of a good contract that considers a senior player’s wages and has promising plans for the youngster’s future at the club. There are many upper mid-table sides who would be more than willing to lure away Tavares for free with lucrative contract deals with more minutes and guaranteed first-team places as a No.8 role player.

The clubs that could compete with Leicester for the player are reportedly Benfica, Sporting, Almeria, Sevilla, Nice, and Premier League’s own Newcastle United.

Upon being asked about this Tavares contract situation, manager Brendan Rodgers had this to say:-

"“It’s up at the end of the season. The club have been in discussions with his representatives. He’s a very talented young player. He fits the profile and has good potential. There is a lot for him to do. I’m pretty sure that will get resolved. I’ll continue to coach him until the end of the season or beyond. We provide an environment for young players. It’s about three fundamental principles. Can we win titles? Can we play attacking football? And can we do it with players from our academy? I would hope they see it as a great place to be. It’s literally a dream for any youngster to be able to utilize the King Power club’s new state-of-the-art training facilities at this point. The club’s investments in the youth is a remarkable gesture that oozes confidence in the future. Tavares has good quality and is self-confident to earn his playing minutes under Brendan Rodgers and such a player from the Foxes’ own academy should be retained at all costs. This tricky situation needs to be resolved soon enough by the club.
