Kasey McAteer is the real deal

One of the stories of the season, Kasey McAteer‘s Leicester ascendency went up a notch as his clinical finish saw his boyhood club take an early lead in Merseyside. The youngster latched onto a sublime through-ball from Akgun and beat Caoimhin Kelleher with a goal steaming with confidence.

The rate of McAteer’s rise has been a surprise to many around the club. Whilst he wasn’t awful during last season’s loan spell at AFC Wimbledon, there was nothing to suggest he was ready to become a first-team starter for the Foxes. Even in pre-season, it was Wanya Marcal who drew the attention of journalists whilst McAteer quietly impressed in the background.  With five goals in eight games – all five coming in his last six appearances – McAteer is now one of the first names on the team sheet.

Brewing with confidence, it’s not just goals that McAteer brings, it’s his determination to press and tackle as well as making intelligent runs to beat the defensive line. Now comfortable playing on the right flank, it would be strange to select anyone other than him against Blackburn.

With Stephy Mavididi looking one of the signings of the season on the left, and Abdul Fatawu growing in confidence as he earns more minutes off the bench, Leicester’s attack down the wide channels is looking far stronger, and has far greater depth, than it was in the Premier League.

McAteer’s rise will also give confidence to both Will Alves and Sammy Braybrooke, two academy youngsters who have been hotly touted for first-team minutes this season once they recovery from their individual injuries. Say it quietly, but Leicester City may just have their own golden generation being readied under Maresca.
