If Leicester rumour is true, it will be a significant downgrade

Leicester City are in a fight to keep central defender Jonny Evans, with Preston’s Ben Davies lined up as a potential replacement, according to the Daily Mail.
With a number of clubs reportedly interested in Jonny Evans, who joined the Leicester City from West Bromwich Albion in 2018, Brendan Rodgers is looking towards the Championship where 25-year-old Ben Davies of Preston North End is apparently Rodgers main target should Evans leave.
The Northern Irish player has less than one-year of his contract remaining and is not getting any younger. Whilst Davies, who played 30 Championship games for Alex Neil’s side finishing ninth, is still yet to hit the peak of his career.
Would it be good business for Leicester City?
The fact this the rumour has no real substance means that this deal is very unlikely to happen. With Evans having played all the Premier League games for the Foxes last term, selling him would be very strange.
Davies is a very good player but with Filip Benkovic returning from his loan spell, Ricardo Pereira coming back from injury – meaning James Justin can fill in at centre-half – the move would raise more questions than praise.
Evans was undoubtedly one of the defenders of the season, showing a level of consistency reminiscent of Robert Huth during the title campaign, so the former should be a mainstay in the East Midlanders‘ side if they are to challenge the top six next season.
The transfer rumour doesn’t have a lot of weight behind it, which is probably why it seems so odd, but it would definitely be a backwards move for the King Power outfit.
